The Greyfriars Order

The Order of St. Francis was established in the 13th century by Francis of Assisi. His intention was to create an order of monks who lived and worked within the community, relying on donations for their survival. This was in contrast to monastic orders like the Benedictines or Cistercians, where the monks lived in separate communities and relied on income from their extensive estates to fund their care and building programmes.
